Natural cosmetics from your own home laboratory part 1.

What will you need?

Fortunately, all the accessories that you have to collect to make your own natural cosmetics can be easily found in the kitchen or just bought in a shop that sells laboratory equipment. Obviously, before mixing ingredients, wash all the instruments, bottles, spoons and bowls. You can do it with either water and soap or with spirit. Prepare: two pots for warming up and stirring the ingredients, a sieve, a porcelain bowl, a grater, jars, a tablespoon, a teaspoon, a measuring jug, kitchen scales, a glass spatula, a thermometer, and labels with the names of products.

Weighting and measuring the ingredients

The truth is, all the ingredients can be measured with the use of a tablespoon and a teaspoon. However, if you want to do it the professional way, apply to the following rules. Solid components should be weighted on the kitchen scales. Teaspoons are divided into some categories like coffee and tea spoons. These differ in terms of size therefore stick to one type only. Sticky substances can be stirred with the same spoon which they were measured with. When it comes to liquids, use a pipette or use a measuring scoop or a jigger (up to 50 ml).

How to prepare a cream and how to prepare a lotion?

Cosmetics are composed of two main substances (phases). So-called ‘water phase’ is composed of herbal infusions and plant extracts. ‘Oily phase’ is made from beeswax, coca butter and lanolin. What should be done in order to combine the both phases? Firstly, we have to put the ingredients (obviously, that have been measured appropriately) into two jars. Next, the two jars have to be put into water bath (60-70 degrees Centigrade). Mind you, the oily phase has to turn into liquid. After that, use either a blender or a mixer and mix the oils. Add gradually liquids. Then, you can add fragrant oils. Mix until you get the consistency you like.

Storage

All natural cosmetics have rather short period of consumption (when they can be used safely). When it comes to some cosmetics, it is no longer than two weeks maximum. What should be done in order to preserve the freshness of the products for as long as it is only possible? First of all,  to make natural products, you have to use only fresh ingredients that are bought in small amounts. Secondly, all the bowls and instruments used have to be perfectly clean and sterile before you start producing your own cosmetics. Thirdly, the home-made products must be stored in tightly twisted bottles or jars made of dark glass. The optimal temperature for storing the natural cosmetics is 10-15 degrees Centigrade.
